Applied engineering, not guesswork
Traditional model railroading leans on lore and trial-and-error. RailForge Lab leans on engineering — CAD and 3D printing, DCC and Arduino-driven automation, wiring and power planning, and measurable, repeatable methods. The goal is a modern HO scale layout that is interactive, automated, and genuinely realistic, with the reasoning behind every decision shown rather than hidden.

Everything RailForge makes carries the same voice: precise, practical, and honest about what worked and what didn't. Builds are documented end to end so you can follow the logic, repeat the results on your own layout, and learn why a technique holds up — not just that it looks good on camera.
How it's organized
Five pillars, one Project
RailForge Lab is built on five foundational pillars, each a discipline of engineered model railroading. They feed into the Project — the single, documented layout build where all five come together on real track.

Where it all comes together
The Project is its own lane — not a sixth pillar, but the culmination. It's the RailForge Mainline: the layout that grows piece by piece as the pillars are applied to real benchwork, track, and scenery.

The RailForge Lab is a growing set of free, browser-based calculators for HO scale — grade and train-length, DCC CV programming, speed matching, minimum radius and turnouts, siding capacity, power and wiring, and more. Reach for them the way you'd reach for a tape measure.
Printed & printable parts
The store offers 3D-printed models we print and mail, free and paid downloadable files, and printable signage — including custom figures printed from a photo you upload.
